Frequently Asked Questions
- Earhoof is a weird name, what's it all about?
My goal with this app was to create something which felt like a real instrument. A good instrument feels like an extension of your body, as opposed to feeling like you're checking your email.
The easiest way to play this app is to just keep your fingers on the surface and slide around. I was doing that with a prototype, and had the thought that the actual physical device (the iPad) became a sort of weird cyber hoof. I also wanted to combine biological ideas with the Epcot-ish future design. So I added the other important body part when playing, the ear, and that jived with the ouroboros logo (which I had been drawing on napkins for a while). It's a unification of hand and ear. The logo also makes me think of a delay type effect, and the two independent delay buses of the program are a big part of its sound. Additionally, hooves implying stepping, and obviously the sequencer is a big part of Earhoof as well.
- How do you pronounce "Psicada"?
The same way you would pronounce "cicada". How that's pronounced is a matter of debate. For a detailed discussion, see this Boston Globe article.
